Question. How do you tell if a directory is a smammy one? There are a lot of directories out there. The really niche, or new directories that people are forming could have lower PR etc. but be a good place for you to be in. So how do you know where you shouldn't be? Or for that matter, where you definitely should be.

It is generally accepted that Links FROM a spammy directory are unlikely to do you any harm (they won't do you any good either). However, If you start to link TO "spam sites" then this can certainly have a negative impact on your rankings.

Thanks for this very informative answer. I've been meaning to look closer at the value of link building in regards to directory submissions. I'm always worries that if your link appears on a site that is regarded as a 'spam' site or whatever your own ranking will be penalized as a result. Is this true do you think?
