Public Speaking: Achievement Unlocked

Tag: education & training, events, personal, seoKalena Jordan @ 10:08 pm

Oooh you're back! Lookin good. Have you lost weight? Yes, that was a compliment designed to butter you up for my next question. Subscribed to my feed yet? :-)

Today marks a milestone for me.

On behalf of the Canterbury Development Corporation, I presented a 3 hour SEO workshop to a group of small to medium business owners based in Christchurch. Nothing too unusual about that, I’ve run workshops before and have presented at conferences and seminars quite a few times over the years.

But what made today different was that it was the very first time I can remember NOT being nervous prior to the event.

Let me explain. I HATE public speaking. Ok, so most people hate it. But the idea of speaking in public makes me sweaty palms anxious and physically ill.  My legs wobble while I’m up on stage, I develop a deer-in-the-headlights stare and I tend to mumble or speak too fast in the hope that the whole ordeal will be over faster. Consequently, I’m not very good at it. Think Bridget Jones without the amusing vocabulary.

But I continue to accept speaking opportunities and MAKE myself go through it. Why? Because I don’t like things that scare me and I want to conquer the fear. I’ve had other people tell me that the more you speak in public, the better you get and the less it intimidates you, so I’ve followed their advice and keep saying YES to situations requiring me to address an audience.

Today, that persistence seems to have paid off. It’s true I was a little jittery yesterday as it dawned on me I would be speaking in front of an audience in a few hours, but that initial fear lasted about 20 minutes. I slept well last night and today, I woke up feeling great. A gym class in the morning got my adrenalin flowing and by the time 1pm rolled around I was feeling confident and, (for the very first time), actually excited about the idea of getting up in front of an audience. I kept waiting for the butterflies to announce themselves in my stomach but they never came!

I spoke more confidently than ever before, had fun with the attendees and enjoyed myself from start to finish. It helped that I had prepared really well, made my slides interesting and interactive, plus I had a very responsive audience. I’m sure all these things contributed, but after 10 years of public speaking terror,  today felt like a huge personal milestone and I’m very proud to have passed it.

Now, if I could just conquer my fear of clowns.

More Not For Profits to Receive Free SEM Training

You may remember that Search Engine College launched a free search engine marketing training initiative last year for charities and not-for-profit organizations worldwide.

If you missed it, we’re offering 25 charities per year the opportunity to learn search marketing skills at no cost, to help them make the most of their limited marketing budgets.

Our 3 latest recipients of free search marketing courses are:

1) UK Connect – the communication disability network, works to promote effective services, new opportunities and a better quality of life for people living with aphasia. UK Connect want to improve the marketing of their training and consultancy with a view to setting up more services around the UK. This will allow them to have a wider impact on those living with communication disability.

2) Christchurch Women’s Refuge -New Zealand’s first and foremost social change agency dedicated to preventing violence against women, young people and children. Their mission is to create a society where all women, young people and children live life free from violence.

3) The Prisoners’ Aid and Rehabilitation Society – PARS is a not for profit assisting prisoners and their families with reintegration & rehabilitation issues throughout New Zealand. Prisoner reintegration is an area that can be difficult to market effectively. A Search Engine College marketing course offers PARS the chance to maximise their publicity and positive social message.

Those are three very worthy not-for-profits and we are delighted to be able to offer their staff a free course.

If you know of a charity or not-for-profit that might benefit from a pro-bono course, please encourage them to get in touch and spread the word by linking to this post.

Thanks!

Latest Charities to Receive Free SEM Training

If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you would have seen that Search Engine College launched a free search engine marketing training initiative earlier this month for charities and not-for-profit organizations worldwide.

If you missed the announcement, we’re offering 25 charities per year the opportunity to learn search marketing skills at no cost, to help them make the most of their limited marketing budgets.

Our 3 latest recipients of free search marketing courses are:

      1) National Heart Foundation of New Zealand – a not-for-profit, non-government organisation that funds research and promotes heart health in order to reduce the rates of cardiovascular disease in New Zealand.

      2) Centre for Alternative Technology – a UK based organization offering solutions to some of the most serious challenges facing our planet and the human race, such as climate change, pollution and the waste of precious resources.

      3) Honoring Emancipated Youth (HEY) – HEY’s mission is to strengthen and connect San Francisco’s systems of support for Bay Area foster care youth so that all youth emancipating, or “aging out” of the foster care system can enjoy a healthy transition to adulthood.

Those are three very worthy not-for-profits and we are delighted to be able to offer their staff a free course.

If you know of a charity or not-for-profit that might benefit from a pro-bono course, please encourage them to get in touch and spread the word by linking to this post.

      Thanks!

Q and A: Can you start a career in SEO / SEM from home?

Tag: Q and A, education & training, jobs, salaries, search industryKalena Jordan @ 11:44 pm

      Question

      Dear Kalena…

I just read your article on SEM careers at Pandia and I have a strong feeling that you probably are the right person that I can air my career-question to.

I am Raj from Hyderabad, India and I am an engineering graduate. I worked as a Software Developer and am planning to shift my career to SEM/SEO. I have been reading as many article as I possibly could on SEO/SEM but unable to get that first break. Could you please answer the following questions for me?

      1. Is it possible for a newbie on SEM/SEO to work remotely (from home)?

      2. Where does a newbie make a beginning and how?

      Regards

      Raj

      Hi Raj

There’s no reason why you can’t start a successful career in SEO and/or SEM working from home. As you’ve already read my “11 Reasons” article, you’ll know the benefits of gaining employment in the search industry.

If you need SEO / SEM training, there are plenty of options available these days, (including *cough* Search Engine College *cough*) but you should also start practising on your own sites and others as soon as possible. Hands-on experience is essential to competency in the field.

Once you feel confident with your newly acquired skills, offer to SEO sites pro-bono or for very little compensation, to help expand your experience. Charity or Not-For-Profit sites often need SEO services but don’t have the budget to hire experts.

Monitor industry job sites such as our SEM Jobs Board and join sites like Elance to bid for projects to gain freelance SEM work. If there is an appropriate opportunity in your location, offer to be an unpaid intern for a SEM agency for a month. The knowledge you will gain will be invaluable. Likewise, you could offer to do some voluntary freelance SEO or SEM work online from home for an agency you respect that is not necessarily in your region.

Review all the posts here in the Jobs and Salaries categories for more inspiration.

      Best of luck!
