This will not affect most SEO work. It really only affects when people search for the same thing more than once. When people type in the same thing more than once they are using Google as a bookmark or as an address bar. I know a lot of people that have no idea there is an address bar to type in a domain name. They type www.example.com into google and click it. That is how the get to all websites the want to type in manually.

If people are not using google as a bookmark or as an address bar almost all other searches are something they have never typed in before. People are constantly getting new computers or getting onto computers other than their own. Personalization does not come into play most of the time.

Great Article! There's no point in panicking. SEOs will have to adapt and carry on (as they usually do). Keep up the good work!

Nice objective round-up of the impacts.

I think this bit "customized SERPs act as a search engine based bookmarklet" is going to be interesting over time as people start to use the customization functionality in different ways (consciously or not).

"Get a grip, People" pretty much sums up my opinion on this as well. SEO is not going anywhere. How do you expect to get into the personalized search results if you are not in the results in the first place?

I had some thoughts on this last week here: http://www.matthewsdiehl.com/google/personalized-search-strengthens-need-for-seo/

I also totally can't wait for malware that emulates clicks in the SERPs to start messing up the personalized click-based SERPs, going to be fun!

Did a search yesterday for "handbags". Prada.com now shows in the results with no description, reason being THEIR SITE IS ENTIRELY IN FLASH! No meta information, no text, nothing from a "SEO" friendly standpoint, the only thing they have going for them is brand. They were WAYYYY down in the results, now they are on the first page. You click the link it goes to the home page, spend some time and try and find the handbags area, (it's hidden deep within the navigation) eventually you go to a different page and directory...so, what do we see? NON RELEVANT dribble of a page shown in search results because they have a strong "brand" association with the word "handbags"...hope they figure that out and fix it...doesn't really offer much of a "purist" approach to search results and actual content.

When in doubt, BING it.

Great article. I am in the SEO industry and I go along with your thought processes. This algo type has been around for years, I am generally always logged in to a Gogole account anyway and also use the google toolbar for search. OK, I notice slight changes when not logged in to a big G account but lets get a grip, it might only be a 4 position change at the most. Everflux has been around for over a year and this can make a huge difference on the same PC with a few mins of a search. This has not killed the SEO industry in fact it weeded our the wheat from the chaff. Change is a good if not a great thing. Stay positive and test and all real SEO'rs of any worth will be fine. I love change, it keeps me on my toes.

There are some questions taht i´m not understand, for example:
· I think that the new content never will shown, because you never click on it...
· How manage the snippets ??
· If this continue always, it´s a disaster, no?: "Different datacenters and Everflux between them mean consistently shifting SERPs"
